Over time, the festival evolved and spread to different parts of Asia, with each country adapting their own unique customs and traditions. In China, the festival is also known as the Yuan Xiao Jie or Yuanxiao Festival (元宵节) Festival is celebrated to commemorate the death of an ancient hero who lived during the Han Dynasty (around 220BC – 25DC).

The Lantern Festival is a time to welcome the coming of spring and celebrate the end of the Chinese New Year. It is believed that the release of the lanterns into the night sky symbolizes the human heart soaring up to the heavens.
